Identifying Your Perfect Audience

Welcome to the Audience Bridge Monday Evening Insights!

I decided at the ripe age of 44 years young, I would start sharing all I’ve learned as a media publisher over the years. I will be providing a new insight into newsletter and audience growth every Monday evening.

So I’ll begin this journey with the question…

Are you having problems trying to identify who your target audience really is?

Don’t worry, most of us have that same problem. I sure did. Luckily there is a very simple way you can identify your perfect ideal customer profile (ICP).

To show you how to do it, I’m going to share with you how we recently launched a satire website The Daily Skrape.

Identify a Similar Site In The Niche

Before we even started building or writing for the site, we knew that it would be similar to Babylon Bee. Since we had a large brand identified, finding out who the audience to target was going to be, was very simple.

First… Look up the brand via Similarweb

If you’ve never used Similarweb it’s an amazing tool. You can enter a website into the app and it will provide a bundle of demographic and traffic information you can use to help build your target audience.

Demographics

That being said we went ahead and entered babylonbee.com into the search to identify the demographic makeup of their website which you can see below.

It was clear based on the info provided, that we’d be targeting an older male demographic for the website.

Similar Sites

You can then look at sites that are similar to the website you are researching by going to the Similar Sites section, which you can see a screenshot of below.

There were 40 similar sites provided that can be used for Ad targeting on Google and Facebook.

I’ll go into more detail on how to acquire these subscribers via these platforms in another newsletter.

Audience Interests

The results you get under the audience interests are pretty vague and similar to results you would see in Google Analytics. Very small percentages, but it’s still good to take a look and see if there’s anything of value.

In this case, a 22% match for News and Media is actually a pretty high percentage for a single specific category under audience interests. So in this case we can target News/Media when showing Ads.

Social

Now let’s take a look at their social traffic makeup to see where the opportunities are to generate traffic via social media.

So we can clearly see the majority of their traffic on social comes from Twitter, so we know that we’ll want a presence on that platform.

There is so much more information you can gather from the similar web results but from what I shared here you can easily see that our audience is going to be…

Older Males who follow News and Media and like to receive the content via email, Twitter, or Facebook.

Based on this knowledge we now know we should run ads on Twitter and Facebook to acquire newsletter subscribers.

Now that we have our ICP identified, we can use what we learned to set up targeted campaigns to drive subscribers to our website.

If you have any questions on the information above or other ways to identify your ideal customer profile to grow your newsletter just send me a reply.
